FJA’s Spring Play Leaving Iowa, Opens April 14

Frankel Jewish Academy’s Performing Arts Department is proud to present its Spring Play, Leaving Iowa, for two entertaining shows Thursday April 14, 7:00 pm and Sunday April 17, 2:00 pm in The Berman Center for the Performing Arts at the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center. There is also a special 1:00 pm matinee on Friday, April 15 for groups attending from area senior residences.

Written by Tim Clue & Spike Manton, Leaving Iowashines a spotlight on a comedy that needs little in the way of explanation-the delights and disasters of the typical family road trip. Don, a successful writer who now resides in Boston, unleashes a torrent of memories about his childhood with Dad, Mom, and Sis when he embarks on a bittersweet task.

Don missed his father’s funeral three years before and regretted it ever since. Planning to make amends, Don begins the journey to his father’s childhood home where he will inter Dad’s ashes. Discovering his grandmother’s home is now a grocery store, Don begins traveling across Iowa in search of a proper resting place. As he drives the familiar roads, the story shifts back and forth from the present to past memories of the annual family vacations of Don’s youth. Ultimately, Don’s existential journey leads him to reconcile his past and present at an unpredictable and perfect final destination.

The cast features: Noah Marcotte (Don); Jonah Erlich (Dad); Sophia Gawel (Mom); Emily Miller (Sis); Eli Sider (Joe Hoefinger and Fred); Lindsey Potoff (Aunt Phyllis and Judy); Jacob Buchman (Civil War Guy and Wayne); Adam Weinbaum (Cart Chaser, Fruit Cart Guy, and Amish Guy #2); Ben Sider (Jack Singer); Samuel Gawel (Grandpa and Bob); Paul Siegel Nadiv (Uncle Phil); Shoshana Applebaum (Grandma and Museum Assistant); Azriel Apap (Amish Guy and Hotel Clerk); Pelli Mechnikov (Fruit Cart Lady and Jessie); Alexis Potoff (Amish Gal and Drunk Lady); and Julia Diskin (Shopping Lady and Jamie).

Leaving Iowa was an enormous hit when it premiered at Jeff Daniels’ Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, MI in 2004. Its timeless appeal and humor will be appreciated by anyone who experienced the classic family road trip.
As an enticement, the FJA Performing Arts Department is excited to announce special group sales ticket pricing. General admission tickets are $10 each. Tickets for groups of 10 or more are $8 each, and groups of 20 or more are just $5 each. Friday’s matinee show (senior groups only) is $5 each.
